I have both an external GRID 3.5 m.34170 and 5.25 m.3402. (As well
as a SCSI 5.25 m.2202) I believe they are all proprietory to Grid and
use special Grid-branded cables. They have dip-switches to set the
drive designations (A or B). The 34170 takes its' power from the host
machine and the 3402 externally. I'm using an old Sony L-T 12v to
power it. The 34170 is hi-density as is the internal in my 1520s.
I haven't opened them up to see who manufactured them but will if
there's any interest.

Thanks. That arrangement also makes it easier to insert those
blasted SIPPs. Should that have been "1MB config". If not, then that
might explain why my 1meg SIPPs are recognized as 256k. I seem
to remember a comment about it not accepting mixed sizes.

Well, it happened again. This time, instead of the 1755 I bought, I
received a GRiDCase 1520. But then again, I suppose I like this more.
The problem is, it doesn't seem to work right.
When I boot it up, it gives me either some weird error message
(forgot what it was), tells me to press f1 to continue, and does
nothing. Other times it says the real time clock is not set, tells me
to set it, then boots normally and works. Other times it boots
perfectly.
Any idea what is going on?
And how do I set this thing's clock?
And how the heck to I get into the BIOS?
BTW, I finally gave up on my 1530. It no longer does anything
whatsoever when I turn it on, and it's been in several peices on my
desk for days. Guess I won't need those BIOS EPROMs after all...

I didn't do an extensive search but it seems to require a 386 which
would rule out my 1520s unfortunately. Never-the-less 1530s and up
would benefit from it. I could put it on my 1755 but I think there are
several versions that work on a 386, and this seems dedicated to
embedded systems. Ah well, there is always Minix, if one wants a
UNIX type system. Something I have on ALL my DOS boxes is
CMFiler a remarkable shareware program which is similar to Norton
Commander but IMHO is much better with many more features. It's
my general hacking engine. GUIs are overrated anyways and CMFiler
allows me to easily look at the code, and perform many operations
with the simple click of the entry key or mouse. I can even zip or
unzip with a simple click. When windoze balks at reading a file I
simply bring up CMF in a DOS window or exit to DOS and do it that
way.

my 1520 and a logitech serial mouse and it works great. Plus it
supports nearly any pointing device you can think of.

Beirnan,
My name is Shawn and welcome to the group.
Cool beans on the 1520. Did the seller advertise it as a 1520 or a
1755? I'm no GRiD expert but I'm pretty sure those are two separate
animals and it would be hard to confuse them.
As far as your errors, it sounds like the Dallas Real Time clock chip is
preventing the computer from booting. Try this (it's a fix from
Lawrence-another list member):
Check out message 330 on the list's Yahoo site. Depends on whether you
have the Dallas clock chip DS12887A or not on your Grid. The "A"
designates it as resettable. Otherwise I believe you just short the
internal
battery on the Grid. The Dallas chip is soldered to the motherboard so
it's necessary to get at the underside of the motherboard unless the
chip
wasn't fully inserted before soldering and you are able to access the
pins
from the top-side. You then short pins 12 and 21. The Dallas chip has
its
own internal battery.
This is a recurring question. I have the schematics of the chip and
specs
from Dallas in a PDF file and another small info file from a firmware
ftp site.
If Charles is in agreement I could upload it to him for insertion in
the files
section.
Lawrence
Did the file ever get into the Files section of the Group?
Also, Beirman, please let us know if this works out for you.
Thanks,
-Shawn

He said it was a 1755, but looking at the pics and description it was
clearly a 1520/30 so I bought it, needing parts for my 1530. I didn't
know it would work so well, and my 1530 is dead and probably not
coming back, so I kept it. Weird thing is, the manuals it came with
and one of the AC adaptors are for the 1755.
I'm almost certain it's a dead CMOS battery that is causing the
problems,
as when I turn it on or reboot it it works normally, and only stops
when I turn it off and let it sit for a few minutes. It then gives me
an error message... something along the lines of "Invalid
configuration information. Code 02.
Press F1 to continue."
Then I CTRL-ALT-DEL and it gives me the clock message, then boots
normally.
BTW, has anyone else had any luck with the internal modem?
It would be great to be able to do email or usenet away from my PC,
and a text browser like DOSLynx or NetTamer probably wouldn't be too
bad on a 2400 baud modem.
I got NetTamer to see the modem, initialize it, and dial my ISP, but
it couldn't connect.
Anyone else get it to work, and is there a way to turn off the modem
speaker?
It's the noisiest modem I've ever heard...

OK it's up there now. Not all versions had the Dallas RTC, some
have a 3.6v lithium battery. In this case it sounds like the RTC is
dead. If so, you'd have to unsolder the chip and solder another one in.
The Grid saves power by disabling the modem. Use
"mode modem on" (without the apostrophes) using the Grid Dos 3.3
version.
A handy program is the shareware program Snooper which is readily
available. It reads the BIOS and can change some parameters.

Beirnan,
Let's see. Sounds like the internal CMOS battery is
almost dead. It's holding a partial change for a few
minutes, but if power is removed for more than that,
the confugarion is lost.
As far as the modem, your ISP may not allow
connections below a certian speed (say 9600 bps).
My 1550 had a modem but things started drawing way too
much current and the power supply was shutting down on
boot up. So, I ended up throwing it way.

well, from what I've heard, replacing the CMOS battery can really

Note of thanks to all that worked on the 1530 rom patch, it worked
great. Took me a while to find a programmer, but I finally got one on
ebay and the program loaded with no problems. Now I got my 1530 to
recognize a cfs420a conner. My next project is to upgrade the memory.
All I have at present is 1 meg. Any suggestions will be greatly
appreciated. thanks, mb

Subject: I got my 1537 TEMPEST working!
Well, I finally found a way to power these things. The power supply
that came with my 1520 had the same weird plug on the back that
prevented me from finding a power supply. Luckily, it also came with
the cable needed to plug in a source of power. The first one I tried
didn't boot correctly, giving the error message "Invalid
configuration settings. Factory defaults restored. Press f1 to
continue" which sounds like a dead CMOS battery to me.
Unfortunately, that 1537 also refused to boot from a floppy, giving
me a "non-system disk or disk error replace the disk and press any
key" message every time. The second one, which I had disassembled out
of sheer curiousity, I put back together and booted it. It refused to
see the conner 40 meg hard drive I put in the removable slide-in hard
drive tray, but did boot from a floppy.
Now, since it has no hard drive and I can't fit everything I want on
a floppy, I made a boot disk with as many system files as I could fit
on it. When I boot it from this disk, the config.sys creates a 1.5
meg RAMDisk and the autoexec.bat transfers all the files into said
ramdisk, so I can use everything without the need for the floppy.
It's been working perfectly, although it's only a temporary solution.
Does anyone know what kind of HDD this thing will take? The card in
the removable tray has the same physical layout as the connectors in
the 1520/30, and so only those old Conner hard disks, and certain
others, will fit.

Beirnan,
What power plug do you have on the back of your 1520? My 1520's and
GRiDCase 2 all have the coaxial barrel type connector. I'm not sure if
you're in the US or not, but those connectors are easily found at Radio
Shack (or Tandy if you're outside the US).
Hopefully, this will answer your hard drive question. It's for a 1530,
but I'm sure you will find it useful.
I think I originally copied this from Rob's GridBoard.
Eagleview: Is this the procedure that you followed?

Hello everybody,
I found a way to connect a Conner CFS210A Harddisk to my GRiDCASE 1530.
(Yes, I have a 200MB HDD AND a 3,5" FDD in my GRiDCASE!) I think it
should
work with each Conner Harddisk which fits mechanically and is below the
520MB border.
The trick is, you have to patch the BIOS.
One (or a few more ;-)) word before you start patching your EPROM:
DON'T USE THE ORIGINAL BIOS EPROMS OR MAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR BIOS EPROMS!
YOU MAKE ALL CHANGES ON YOUR OWN RISK!
Note the Checksum of each original EPROM, you need it later on.
How the BIOS works:
My GRiDCASE has the Version "80386 ROM BIOS Version 3.06 10/25/89".
First the BIOS uses the Harddisk-command ECh to identify it; then it
looks into the identification for the Harddisk-type and compares this
with a BIOS-internal table of
allowed Harddisk. In my BIOS the table starts at F000:F63C and includes
the following types CP3022, CP3024, CP3044, CP3042, CP344 and CP3104.
You can check
this with DOS debug and using "d f000:f63c" it corresponds with the
EPROM-address 763Ch in byte- and 3B1Eh in word-mode.
Then there must be a second table with six pointers, one for each
HDD-type, I didn't search for this table till now, because I found a
workaround by chance.
This pointer points to an entry in a third table, the table of
HDD-parameters. It starts at BIOS-address F000:E400, EPROM-address 6400h
in byte- and 3200h in
word-mode. Each entry is 16 (10h) bytes long. Then the BIOS uses this
parameters.
Now to the solution. You have to change three points into the BIOS:
1. the HDD-type; 2. the parameter entry; 3. the BIOS-checksum.
Step 1:
I changed the first and the second entry in the type-table (3B1Eh):
The original content was (in ASCII):
CP3022CP3024CP3044CP3042CP344CP3104
to the following:
CFS210ACP344CP3044CP3042CP344CP3104
The first entry is the type of the HDD you will use (for me CFS210A), I
changed the second entry to another valid entry (CP344). So I didn't
change the table length
and all enntries are valid. You may change more then this entrys, but
use only valid entries and don't change the table length.
Step 2:
By chance I found out, that entry two in the parameter-table belongs to
entry one in the type-table. Entry two starts at BIOS-address F000:E410,
EPROM-address
6410h in byte- and 3208h in word-mode.
The CFS210A HDD has the following parameters:
Cyl 685 2ADh
Hds 16 10h
WPComp 0 0h
LZone 2477 9ADh
Sect 38 26h
meaning ? Cyl Hds ? ? WPComp ? ? ? ? ? LZone Sect
original entry 00 | 67 02 | 04 | 00 00 | 2C 01 | 00 00 00 00 00 | 67 02
| 11
patched entry 00 | AD 02 | 10 | 00 00 | 00 00 | 00 00 00 00 00 | AD 09 |
26
Remember, you have to exchange high and low byte (Cyl, WPComp and
LZone).
Step 3:
Change the checksum of each EPROM to the original value. By making the
above patches, you changed the checksum of the EPROMs. I used a trick to
restore the
original values. At the beginning of each EPROM is a string with a
copyright note "Copyright 1985,1986 Phoenix Technologies Ltd.". You may
change this strings in a
form, that brings you back to the original checksum. This string is only
(and not more) a copyright note. The checksum of my even-EPROM is F600h
and of the
odd-EPROM is 8600h.
May be you can help me, I am looking for a battery slide in module (is
it the correct formulation?) for my 1530 because it came without one and
for an ethernet adapter.
If you have documentation about the connectors, specially the internal
and the external peripheral or if you find out more about connecting
HDD's, please mail it to me.
Please, don't use this information commercially (without giving me a
little bonus ;-}), I worked hard for two days to find out this
informations!
I wish you good luck and success, many greetings from germany

Oh sum had a 3 prong DIN. Two prongs large (current) and one smaller
(shell ground) IT think this was for the Tempest hardining.

Huh. It looked like a DIN plug, but I never saw a 3-prong one before.
As for the harddrive, I don't have an EPROM programmer, and even if I
did, I would have no idea how to make the necessary additions/changes.
The 1537's BIOS is totally different.
I don't even know where the BIOS ROMs are, this thing is very
difficult to disassemble.

I've been trying to get a compact flash card to work with little success
at the moment, as my 1530sx won't boot either.
But it appears to be the best solution

My 1550sx had the same power connector. I totally
forgot about that. What I did is use two small nails
inserted into the porecepticleical on the GRiD and
then connect the power supply to the computer via
aligator clips. Not fancy, not safe, but it worked.
My 1550 died for reasons not related to the power
supply and ended up in the trash.

I've been following this interesting conversation, and was a little
surprised. I have 3 GRiD 1520's. They all have the coaxial-looking
power connector that I have seen mentioned, and the also all have the
battery slot in back... for the GRiD battery that has a cross-section
profile of a rectangle with one corner clipped off. I picked up a GRiD
1040, which is one of the cheapo-plastic laptops, and it arrived with
a couple power supplies that are shaped exactly to fit into the 1520
battery receptacle, and accept a normal 110v computer power cable on
the outside face, and have both contact points for the 1520 battery well,
and a five prong female barrel plug jack on the inside face, so that
it works for 1520's and any other computer that has the same power
requirements, and can handle the five prong jack.

All,
IIRC, my 1550sx needed the 5 pin prong that Robert
describes. I think the reason is the 1550 (and
possibly the 1537 as well) need a higher turn on
current. IIRC the power supply is spec-ed at 16.25V @
3.25 amps. The other 16.25 V power supply's with the
traditional coaxial barrel type connector were spec-ed
at 2 or 2.5 amps.
I'm sure someone has a better memory than me and could
elaborate.

It is a long narrow tube under the keyboard at the front of the
motherboard. I haven't taken the battery apart but I would bet the
package contains 3 or 4 easily available from radio-shack ni-cad
batteries. Be very carefull about changing the boot option to HD,
it could create later problems when the lousy OConner drive fails,
as it will inevitably do.

I have had a 1755 for many years and it has always recognized the c drive. It
has been very stable and the hard drive has never crashed on me. I am
wondering if the f disk is a rather harsh approach to getting the c drive to
go. Can you get to a c prompt at all? If so you might type dir and look at
the directories. You could also type edit and look at the autoexec.bat files
and see if it is set up so it can start up. It should have a smart drive
command and then take you to windows or some kind of menu program. Hope this
is helpful. Andy Simonson

Thanks for all of the replies. I tried HSECT but the program prints
the "Formatting ...." but did not print the "complete" message even
after 1 hour. I guess now I'll try to find another hard drive to
try. Funny thing is I picked up these units hoping to get parts to
fix my first GRiD 1530.
Cheers.
PS: I looked for the drive parameters but found different values.
The HSECT from Tandy say type 45 but the drive parameters differ
from the info at the Conner site for the 80Mg drive. I tried both
but still Hsect failed.

Actually what you are looking for is a VGA Pod that fits in the battery
slot. If you look inside the slot you will see the 9pin and 15 pin VGA
connectors as well as the battery terminals. I've often wondered if
one could simply plug into one and simply run VGA, but the VGA
pod is the same size as the battery or ACpower pod so I imagine
there is also some logic in there.

I honestly don't think it would matter if I had the adapter or not,
as the screen itself is still only capable of CGA display.
That's the problem.

The long, skinny battery at the front of the keyboard
is actually the "suspend" battery. The CMOS battery is
integral with the "Dallas" CMOS chip. The only way to
change the battery is to replace the chip! The good
news is, they seem to last almost forever.
FYI: the 80 MB Conner drive seems to be the only drive
that the 1755 will autodetect. By using an overlay (I
used a program called "Snooper"), you can use hard
drives up to about 120MB. The only downside is, you
have to run the overlay every you change settings in
SET1755.

Carefull...
Back in 89 there was no "suspend" that is actually the CMOS battery.
This would be on systems tat used the 18618 CMOS / RTC chip (provide your
own backup power and clock referance)

Actually they start to fall out after about 15 years. This is why we are
seeing this more frequently now.

No, that was a response to "beirnan". Sorry, I'll have to adjust the
"attribute" in my mailer. I am perfectly happy with my red plasma
display and if I do need a VGA output I always have my VGA pod,
or other computers that have the capability of doing more demanding
graphic intensive operations. It is after all a 286 which came out in
the 80s and has remarkable capabilities for a computer of that era.
With my 2MB memory I am delighted that I can use Win 3.1,
MSWorks and other graphic programs. I have been debating about
installing Quarterdeck's Deskview which was a very capable MSDOS
multitasking environment.
I tried using the 1meg SIPPS in position 1,3,5,7 of the memory bank
but the 1520 choked on that and only acknowledged 512k. The full
bank of 4 1meg and 4 256k SIPPs is recognized as 2 meg. I guess it
only recognizes 256k. Possibly a BIOS limitation cause 286s were
capable of recognizing 16megs of memory.

Subject: Grid 1755 almost working
I picked up 3 GRiD 1755s hoping to find some parts for a 1530.
The 1755s did not boot from the hard disk and hsect/fdisk were
useless. Taking apart one the units must have jarred the disk because
it booted after being reassembled. So, I got my rubber mallet out and
fixed the other two.
Now the remaining problems:
Units 1 and 2 boot from the hard disk but the LED status panel for
the disc/caploc/numloc.. does not light up or is intermittent. I
thought it was a bad wire or solder joint but everything looks ok.
Unit 3's led status panel is ok but it fails to boot with the
message "boot sector not found". Running fdisk finds the disk but I
don't want to erase the OS.
Any suggestions or should I just be content with 2 out 3?

Thanks to all who responded with advice for my broken 1530.
I posted a hard drive request on my local bulletin board and found
another suitable drive. Not only did the 1530 recognize the drive but
it also booted with a menu based OS. (Arrow key driven but then I
guess you can't be picky with the screen type).
Now I was wondering if I should try to install Linux or GEM.
Any suggestions?
Cheers.

Subject: help w/ 2270
Well, The 2270 I bought off ebay just arrived.
The seller said it no longer powered up, but, after some testing, I
learned that the AC adaptor was dead.
I found a suitable adaptor, and, after charging the battery, tried to
turn it on.
The lights come on, and the hard drive spins up (usually), but
nothing else happens. I hooked it up to my monitor think maybe the
backlight was dead, but nothing happened.
During one failed attempt to boot it the backlight did come on, and
several bright lines appeared across the screen, but it didn't do
anything else.
Any ideas?
And if anyone has a manual for this, it would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, Steve is right and that skinny battery pack
*is* the resume battery. Take a look at
http://support.tandy.com/support_computer/doc1/1515
.htm (you may have to paste that URL back together)
which is for the Tandy 3820 HD, which is the same

I've seen this problem, and it's probably a failed
surface-mount inductor that feeds the +5v (I think
it is) for the whole status panel. I can check
which location it is but it'll take me a few days
to dig out the info and you may be able to trace
the circuitry faster yourself.

You may not have an OS to erase at this point, and
the 1755 will run pretty much any DOS you have
around. Can you seen anything on the C: partition
when you boot from a diskette?

I bought a 2270 on ebay that did power up, but did not recognize the
floppy. After charging for hours, I did finally get it to recognize
the setup program of which I changed to boot from floppy. After booting
from the floppy I changed the CMOS date and did a soft boot to which it
finally recognized the floppy drive. I finally realized that it had a
weak CMOS battery. Radio Shack sells a 3.6v lithium battery, however it
does not have any leads to solder to, so I used a phone 3.6v battery
from Best Buy. Charged it up on my cordless phone first and then
soldered it in place using the modem location. You can fit the small
3.6v lithium phone battery in the middle if it is the slim battery pack.
After that my 2270 worked great. I'm not sure what all the CMOS
controls, all I know is when the CMOS battery is weak, you can have any
no. of problems with these guys. Hope this helps. mb

I, too, have been searching for another source of mindless
entertainment when I'm on the road with my 1520 -unfortunately the
CGA screen is rather limiting.
There are several good sites out there with educational (and some...
not so) games out there that will work on a 286, as for real games
all I've found is a pac-man clone, and two sidescrolling adventure
games...
There must be more but I haven't found anything.
If you really want some games, I suggest you make them yourself.
QBasic comes with DOS, is pretty easy to learn, and hey, it doesn't
always take much to impress a 5 year old.

Subject: Re: [RuGRiD-Laptop] Re: Games for my 1520
The 1520 display is only limited if you've been conditioned to expect
the gee-whiz graphics of Dr. Doom and the other graphic intensive
games of the newer video machines. My 1520 with 2megs of memory
has no problems with the graphics of Win 3.1. There are a multitude
of games out there available, that will run fine on it's display. I just
downloaded a great collection of Basic games that were geared to an
even earlier technology. I suspect the limitations are yours not the
1520. Try Googling.
You have mentioned this before. And I must question how much
experience you've actually had with older video displays. The video
adapter certainly is more capable than the original VGA display that
came out with the IBM 8580.
Could you detail the problems you have, so that we might comment
on them. You can't expect a computer of that era to be able to do
Playstation games. Be realistic. Check out Simtel. For a graphic
program see if NeoPaint will work. I have both CGA and EGA
monitors and the 1520 display certainly surpasses any of them.
Should I really get picky I can also attach a VGA monitor, using
the VGA pod. Of course when it came out most users didn't buy it
for CAD or graphic-intensive games. It was a serious computer
geared to the military and corporate users.
What is it that you are really trying to say ?

Thanks for the info. I'll try to trace back the voltage supply of the LEDs.
Cheers.

Peter,
I was able to dig out the service manual, and the
component I suspect is actually a ferrite bead (not
an inductor), FB109, located on the bottom of the
system board not far from the connector CN18 that
the LED board cable plugs into. You can just short
it out; I think its purpose is to isolate
mini-power surges (these boards use a lot of these
little ferrite beads).
There doesn't seem to be a way to provide an
external CMOS battery source, by the way; the only
thing to do would be to replace the DS1287 RTC chip
(probably with a DS12887), but the desoldering
isn't easy. Maybe clip the leads to the old chip
and solder to them?

Does anybody know where I can find EL backlite panels sutable for a 10
inch LCD display.
My GRiD seems to cook them prety regularraly after a couple months of
use. I think the inverter voltage is too high but I do not have any of
the engineering spec.
Someone who has proper sizes (8 1/2 X 6 1/2) or cutable EL sheet or even
a process for 'do it yourself'

Subject: GRiD 1520 hard drive not recognized
Hello everyone,
I hope someone can be of help here. I have a GRiD 1520 and it
doesn't recognize the hard drive. It is the original (as far as I
know) 20MB Conner. Here is what I have done:
1. I tried the setup programs. Didn't work.
2. I pulled the hard drive and put it in another laptop. It works
just fine.
3. I put another hard drive in to see if it would take. It didn't.
The setup programs doesn't seem to work anyway. I don't think the
CMOS battery is working. I also get an error message upon boot up. It
says "invalid configuration information; code 2" Any ideas on what
this means?
I was thinking the problem could be the hard drive controller but I
am not sure where it is exactly. The hard drive does power up and you
can here it spin.
Also, it has a blue screen. Is this common with this model GRiD. I
actually bought it to resell but I have deceided I am going to hang
on to it. I am going back to school soon and I figure I can get some
use out of it.
Any help would be great. Thanks for your time.

Oh...
Make sure the jumpers are set
If it is a CP3024
Short C/D and ACT
FYI You cannot set the hard drive type it is automatic and limited to 4
conner models. CP344 CP3024 CP3044 CP3104 The BIOS actually reads the
model number data in the drive ID table.

Ahh .. well.. its funny that you mention Viagra.......... l;-)
On a more serious note has anyone been able to hack a more modern
laptop into on the the 'classic' grid shells. Even though I appreciate
the early systems I would love to figure out some way to get a more
modern system into the Magnesium case of a 1520 or so. I more or less
figured out how to modify my now very deceased 1550sx with a IBM
Thinkpad 750c (still only a 486). But the limit I ran into was the need
of a custom IC to translate the GRiD Keyboard (which I love and I want
to keep at all costs) to PS2 or IBM's Laptop keyboard interface. Anyone
been able to get similar ideas up and running ?
Just a thought

What? and waste a perfectly good GRiD :-)
I have looked into this some. Best I could figure is to design one from
the ground up. GRiD UK does have some high performance tempest hardened
systems. (bring your checkbook)
Beyond that I have found it hard to locate any motherboards that do not
require wquipment that is unexceptable. e.g. Unusual hard to find
memory, or unstable chipsets, or incorrect LCD size (10 inches is rather
rare. In the common are 8", 12", 14", 15"...

would someone head me in the right direction so i can figure out
how to use these laptops.. dos 5 and wordperfect among other programs
seem to be installed, but I truly don't know anything about these
laptops.... any chance theres a manual hiding out there somewhere.
Also, I didn't see much on 1535's in the message boards. Are the
components simular to the 1530's...
I do appreciate any help i can get and will eventually be unloading
some of these if anyone is interested.. but first I need to make sure
they are in working condition. Thanks again, country_lala@... )

Subject: GRIDCASE 1520 won't recognize hard drive
I have had this machine in mothballs for a couple of years and it
always worked fine before. I tried to reactivate it as my scanner
contoller and now I get the following messages.
Invalid configuration information; code 02
Strike the F1 key to continue
I would like to find out:
1. How to get to the BIOS setup and reset the HDD. Or how do I
check to find out if the drive is bad.
2. Is there any problem running DOS 6.22 on this machine.
3. How in the world do you get the case off this monster?
4. Is there any way to replace the internal BIOS battery if that is
a problem.
Any and all help with these problems would be appreciated.
I am really stupid when it comes to this machine so please bear with
me if I ask foolish questions.
Thank You

Subject: Re: [RuGRiD-Laptop] GRIDCASE 1520 won't recognize hard drive
Rbreslin:
Don't feel bad about the questions. Everybody has to
start somewhere. :-)
Scanner controller? Like are you running Trunker,
ETrunk, or Demo88? If so, I'd like to know if it
works. I wasn't sure if those programs would work on
a 286.
As far as the GRiD, what happeneds when you press F1?
Does it boot normally?
I suspect the CMOS battery is dead. If the battery
can still hold a charge, try letting the computer run
for a few hours.
To remove the case, look at the rear of the unit. You
should be looking at the serial, parallel, and monitor
ports. On the top left and top right, you should see
two rubber or hard plastic "feet". Use a small
flatblade screwdriver to remove those feet. Behind
those feet are Phillips screws. Once you remove those
screws, place the computer in front of you as if you
were going to use it. The top cover should slide to
the rear about 1/2 inch and allow you to remove it.
IIRC, the CMOS battery is on the right side, forward
(towards the keyboard) side of the hard drive.
I have run DOS 6.22 on my 1520 until about a month
ago. It appears as if my hard drive is failing. I
ran scandisk and it said there were errors. It went
though trying to fix the "errors" on just about every
sector. It died with an error in the middle of
"fixing" the hard drvie and now it won't boot. I
haven't had time/motivation/a need to reinstall DOS.
I hope that helped and let us know if yo have any more
questions.

Shawn,
To answer your question I am running Probe V7 to drive a Radio Shack
PRO-2035 with an OptoScan S535 board installed. This combination
works well on the grid with the trade-off of speed. If you are not
in a big hurry it will scan approx. 50 freqs per sec. Will go higher
on faster system but more than a 486 is overkill for this.
After pressing F1 it gives me a disk boot error and continues until I
put a system disk in a:.
I finally got it up and running but I had to let it run for over an
hour and try rebooting the machine every so often. The disk seems to
be ok so I would guess it is either the battery and/or something else.
DOS 6.22 runs fine on this machine and I also have Lotus Works
running on it (Word Processor/Spreadsheet/Database)and works fine.
DOS 6.22 gives me scandisk and defrag which show no problems with HDD.
I have access to another 1520 and will see if I can transfer my
software
My special thanks for the info on getting inside. I will try it when
I get the other grid up and running.
It's really sad that I have about a dozen battery packs for this
machine and none of them will hold a charge. Fortunately the AC
adaptor still works really well.
Can you replace the CMOS battery in the Grid?
I have a really good running 586 which I am going to transfer to if I
can't get one of the Grids running.

Yeah, 10-15 year old ni-cad's really don't hold much
of a charge. :-( They can be rebuilt, however. I
think Charles has a link or an address for a couple of
companies that will do it.
> Can you replace the CMOS battery in the Grid?
As a general rule, nothing is impossible with enough
time and money. ;-)
IIRC, the battery has pigtail leads and is soldered to
the motherboard. The replacement that I bought from
Radio Shack did not have pigtail leads. I think I cut
the battery away from the board but I cut it close to
the battery side of the leads. Then, I (carefully)
soldered the new battery to the remaining leads. If
you go this route, be careful. Ni-Cad's don't like
being heated up to soldering iron temperatures. Make
your soldering time quick. If the core heats up and
the battery outgasses, then battery starts to loose
capacity. Also, I'm sure nickle and cadmium fumes
aren't the greatest to be breathing.
Spot welding is the way to go, but I don't have access
to a spot welding machine.
Good luck.

Er.. The only compain that I know of is Bateries+
They have a rebuild shop but bring your checkbook.
Maybe someone on the list could venture into this.

Thanks Charles, I'll put them on my list for when I get this monster working

Shawn,
Thanks for the CMOS battery info. I live in a very small town but we do
have a computer repair place here and I may try to get them to replace the
battery instead of attempting it myself if they don't charge me a lot.
There are a few places here that I could get the battery spot welded if it
comes to that. I have soldered ni-cads together before with a very high
heat Weller soldering gun and they worked fine but they were larger
batteries and could handle it.

Well this is certainly off-topic but dear to my heart.
There is a whole realm of alternate energy sources
out there and if this was the focus of the USA populace
there would be no need for the coming war, which really
is about control of mid-east oil and USA need for
stability in oil supply.
Then again if internal combustion engines are an
outmoded energy force, one can only expect the
corporate producers to put up a hell of a fight.
GM's budget has been declared larger than most
small nations, Big Oil corporations likely larger.
They will protect thier turf and as I would propound
Dubya and Cheyney are owned by oil. This is why
the US has not signed onto the Kyoto accords
despite the overwhelming evidence of the danger
to our planet of the present course. Like most
CEOs their jobs depend on present profits not
the well-being of the future occupants of this planet.
The technology is already there that would move
us out of this self-destructive angst, but it involves
the loss of a whole lifestyle and hundreds of
thousands of jobs and we have few leaders who
aren't tied to vested interests.
Like some religious seminar who hopes the basic
goodness of man will triumph in the end, I do hope
that we can triumph over this seeming impass.
But it won't be easy. The alternative is death and
destuction. If not, once man is gone perhaps mother
earth will be able to restore herself.

I believe I have found a source for SIPPs. It's a company
that manufactures ram and has them in stock. When I get
further info I'll let the list know. Hopefully they are the
right form factor, they are presently still supplying them to
Telco's but it would seem they would sell in small
quantities at decent prices or maybe we could do a group
buy.

I seem to remember somewhere seeing that a GRiD Compass sold recently
for around the $8000 in a non-ebay auction, (maybe I am over estimating
the price , my memory is a little fuzzy on the compass). It seems the
Compass has been tagged as the first "Clam Shell" laptop/portable
computer design. I also don't know how accurate this is as with most
things in the computer industry it all depends on who you believe

The BIOS ROM is a pair of 27C128
IF you have the 152X or 153X with CGA adapter there are two slots under
the door in the keyboard. These would be for ROM-Disk applications and
use 27C1024 (or equ 128K by 8)

Yahoo is now using something called "Web Beacons" to track Yahoo Group users around the net and see what you're doing - similar to cookies. Take a look at their updated privacy statement.
About half-way down the page, in the section "Outside the Yahoo! Network", you'll see a little "click here" link that will let you opt-out of their new method of snooping. You may want to do this. Once you have clicked that link, you are opted out.
Notice the "Success" message at the top of the next page. Be careful, because on that page there is a "Cancel Opt-out" button that, if clicked, will *undo* the opt-out.

I ordered a few at about $.50 a chip for a quantity of 15 or so. I think
they may have dropped in price since then. I bought a few already erased,
however the erasers are not very expensive either. Used them on my 1530 and
they work great.

Thanks Charles. I know the number had been posted
before but couldn't find it in the archive. It's for my 1520s.
Now hopefully he has that type. Thinking of putting the
O.S. in there.
He posted that he had 2716 thru 27512, CMOS and
regular. I know very little about EPROMs. Based on the
"C" in the 27C1024 designation I'm guessing it's a CMOS
with 1 meg available. Wonder if the 512s could be used ?
BTW how does one dump the BIOS using Debug just to
see what all is in there ?

Subject: Gridcase 1535 EXP and Hard Drive Configuration
Hello,
I have a Gridcase 1535 EXP and the hard drive froze solid on it. I
picked up a Connor CP3104 on Ebay a while ago, which was rumored to
work with the GRID. I looked at Seagate's configuration site, played
with the jumpers, but I cannot get it to work properly. In one
configuration, I can get the computer to work from the floppy, but
when I try to fdisk the hard drive, it says none detected. Does
anyone have any hints how to get them to work together? I have an
interface board, one side goes through two sets of flat cables to the
expansion connector on the bottom of the GRID, the other hooks up to
the HD connector. I had to add power wires for 12/5V. Are there any
tricks that I need to do to get it to recognize the hard drive?
Thanks for your help,
Bob

I will search for a website for you. You need a drive configuration software to get your grid case to see the hard drive.
But I must worn you.....
After loading this to get the hard drive to work the system asked for a password. I have been locked out of my gridcase for one year. It just sits on the shelf. maybe yours will work. but that is what you need is a program to setup the harddrive.

Hello there, Dane. Welcome to the group.
I have 2 1520's. One has the amber EL display and the other has the
non-backlit LCD display. Currently, only one has a hard drive. :-(
What's inside the 1520? It's a 286 and it may or may not have a working
hard drive. You probably have between 1 and 4 meg of memory.
Battery's are available for it but I don't have a source.
As far as running it from a car adapter, yes, you can. Just be sure the
power supply or DC to DC converter can supply 16 volts at about 2 amps
and you'll be fine. The auto adapters I've seen on eBay recently seem
to have the plug for the 1550SX and not the coaxial barrel type that
found on the 1520.
Let me know if this info is helpful and good luck with your GRiD's!

Hello all:
I have a GRID 1530.
When I power it on, the screen reads:
------
Phoenix 80386 ROM BIOS Version 3.06 10/25/89
Copyright <blah blah blah>
640K Base Memory, 00384K Extended
Invalid configuration information: code 02
Strike F1 key to continue
------
When I hit F1, it gives me "Disk Boot Error" about every 25 secs, and
tries to access the floppy. When I put a DOS 6.20 floppy in, it boots.
I'm guessing the battery's bad, 'cause it can't remember what day it
is.
My questions:
1) What is 'code 02'?
2) How do I access the bios? I tried several of the usual keys: no
luck.
3) Does it have a hard drive? I typed 'c:' at the a: dos prompt and
it says 'Invalid Drive specification'
Thanks in advance,

Subject: Re: [RuGRiD-Laptop] Re: New User :) Battery Help
Dane,
Sorry, I get a lot of email and I can't remember
specifically which GRiD you have.
I seem to remember you saying you have the 1520. As
far as upgrades, generally, nothing is impossible with
enough time and and money! :-)
Yes, the memory can be upgraded but I think 4 Meg is
as high as it will go. The trick is finding 1 Meg
SIPP's. Not SIMM's but SIPP's.
I haven't seen any pricing on those. Because they're
hard to find, they tend to be expensive.
Hard Disk: Yes, but..... The GRiD BIOS only allows 4
different model Conner harddrives to be connected. I
think 40 Meg (yes, megabyte) is the largest it with
natively support. The BIOS can be edited with a hex
editor and PROM programmer, but you have to know what
you're doing. You can go through the archieves to
find the instructions. If you can't find it, I can
dig it up.
CD-ROM: Probably not. I don't think the GRiD is dual
channel IDE. Even if it is, I don't know where you'd
plug it in.
Processor: No. The 286 is soldered to the board. I
think Charlie Ford (another list member) has some
experience upgrading and overclocking GRiD's, but I
don't think the 1520 was one of them. Hopefully,
he'll chime in.
Good luck,
-Shawn
